Unless it is absolutely necessary, a student should be added to the multi-car/multi-driver family policy rather than obtain their own policy. This is the best way to get young driver's car insurance at a cheap rate. It is generally less expensive to add a student to an existing policy than to start a brand new policy. For high school students, this is often the best course of action and it will save the family the most money. However, if the student is in college and lives in a different geographic area, they will have to obtain their own young driver's car insurance policy.
