Do I need car insurance even if I leave my car at home while I'm away at school?

At School without a Car

College car insurance is just as important to carry as college health insurance--even if you don't have a car at school with you. You never know what might come up that could require you to drive or borrow a car, and keeping insurance on you year-round can help you be prepared for anything.

Examples of Unexpected Driving Needs

  1. Driving someone else's car: If you're at a party with friends, you may need to act as a designated driver and drive your friends home in one of their cars. Even though you're only driving one night out of many, do not assume that this means you don't need college car insurance year-round. If you were to be involved in a car accident on that night, you could put your family and your future in financial jeopardy without insurance coverage.
  2. Driving on the holidays: Chances are, you'll return home for the holidays--and there your car will be sitting in the driveway. While you might not have planned on it initially, you may decide once you're home that you want to drive your car and see friends. If you don't have a car, you might want to borrow your parents' car. If you have car insurance, then you can do these things without having to worry (or having your parents worry).
